Introduction

Here, we will emphasis on the contributions of the late Dr Goh Keng Swee.

Roles:

Contributions:

Minister for Finance

Ø structured Singapore's industrial in order to net the investments from global corporations

Ø introduced an industrialization program with the aim of creating jobs for Singaporeans

Ø transformed Jurong, a swampy wasteland at the time, into Singapore's first industrial estate

Ø offered incentives and drew in foreign investments to jumpstart the area’s development

Ø initiated the setting up of the Economic Development Board (EDB), which was established in August 1961 with the purpose of furthering the economic development of Singapore by attracting foreign investments

Minister for Interior and Defense

Ø built up the Singapore Armed Forces from scratch

Ø the brain behind the concept of national service

Ø highlighted the importance of national defense in the small republic

Minister for Education

Ø saw through a series of reforms such as the Streaming system which sought to minimize wastages of talent in the Singapore education system

Ø emphasized the importance of bilingualism
